History in

A person's hand holding a smartphone, with a glass of red wine and a plate of cheese and crackers on the table nearby.

Prominently positioned along one of Capitol Hill’s most iconic blocks, 1015 East Capitol Street SE is a rare surviving example of Aesthetic Period architecture. Spanning approximately 4,800 square feet and extending the full depth of the block from East Capitol Street to North Carolina Avenue, this grand 1881 residence—designed by Robert Collins for attorney John Vance Lewis—has been meticulously preserved. Its original millwork, stained-glass details, decorative hardware, and period craftsmanship remain intact, offering a remarkable blend of history and enduring design.

The main level features original pine floors and chestnut paneling, introduced by a vestibule topped with a stained-glass clerestory window. The dual-parlor living room includes a wood-burning fireplace, while the dining room showcases William Morris wallpaper reproduced by Bradbury & Bradbury and original glass-front built-ins. A wet bar, powder room, and a kitchen with access to the outdoor spaces complete this level.

Upstairs, the primary suite includes a wood-burning fireplace, a Murano glass chandelier from the 1960s, and full-height louvered doors in the walk-in closet. The adjoining bedrooms feature original Aesthetic Period ceiling medallions, preserved millwork, and access to the connecting breezeway. A later renovation added a bright rear bay overlooking North Carolina Avenue and Lincoln Park, introducing a level of flexible space that is exceptionally rare for the neighborhood.
